Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!
Much love, prosperity, joy and happiness to you and your loved ones.

I hope you all had a lovely celebration. I was hosting a party for the first time and had family and friends over. We had lots of food, drinks, and laughs. Then around 2am when everyone left my fiance and I headed out . We met on New Years 2009 so it was our anniversary.. kind of.
As you can see I'm still wearing my kinky twists, I wanted to take them out, but I got too lazy. Plus, I had no idea what else to do with my hair and I was too busy planning the party. I gotta admit hosting a party is a lot of work!! I don't want to say never again... but you don't realize how much work it is unless you host one. It was worth it though.

This is how I wore my hair. Yeah I know, nothing special.
But check out my makeup. I was so proud of myself lol

I always loved makeup and admired makeup artists but I suck at applying makeup myself, so I have been trying to improve my skills, and extend my makeup application beyond my foundation-mascara-and-gloss routine. I don't actually wear foundation on a daily basis, only when I go out, so its more like mascara-and-gloss routine.
There is hope though, I'm getting there, thanks to all the Youtube Gurus and Kevyn Aucoin's Making Faces book that I got for Christmas (About that... I don't know know what this gift was supposed to mean...but I hope it wasn't "let me show this girl how to put on makeup, because she looks a mess"lol.) Maybe my friend is extra caring and just checked my Amazon's wish list. Anyways..I still appreciate and I'll try to review his book soon.

Holiday Party & Kinky Twists update

Hey  ladies, I've been MIA for  a while because I was studying for exams. I had to come back to the reality of being a full time student...sigh

Anyways I haven't been doing much  with my hair since I still have my kinky twists. I'm just wearing as it is (...and loving that with my lazy self lol) or in a updo.

These are pictures of how I wore my hair to attend various holiday parties at my job. My twists are still looking good, and I plan on keeping them for one month...hopefully!

Maintenance:
I've been trying to avoid putting tension on my edges by limiting tight ponytails.
Oiling my scalp with coconut oil twice a week (or whenever I remember lol)
Washing and conditioning every 7-10 days.

Product Review: Elast QP DPR 11

Rating
4/5

I've been a fan of this product from the start. I love how it makes my hair feel. The good thing about it, is that is does wonder for both my relaxed ends and my natural hair. That's a plus for transitioners! It leaves my hair feeling so soft and moisturized.
As you probably know, they recently changed the formula, and many people think that the ingredients they used before were better, but if you look closely, you notice that everything that's listed before "Purified Water/Aqua" are only extract that they used to infuse the water! Clever marketing ploy!
That said, I like the new consistency and  packaging better. The smell is quite the same, maybe better, but that's only my personal taste.
  • The new ingredient list:
Water, petrolatum, cetyl alcohol, cetrimonium chloride, emulsifying wax nf, dimethicone, olea europaea (olive fruit oil), cocos nucifera (coconut oil), retinyl pamitate (vitamin a), biotin (vitamin h), linoleic acid (vitamin f), persia gratissima (avocado oil), Vitamins b2, d, a, e, k, and potassium, steareth 10, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, parfume, methylparaben, propylparaben, imidazolidinyl urea, tocopherol (vitamin e), melissa officinalis (mint balm extract), melaleuca alternifolia leaf extract (tea tree), panax ginseng root extract (ginseng), CI 15985 (fd&c yellow 6)

(For comparison)

  • The old ingredient list
Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract, Melissa Officinalis (Balm Mint) Leaf Oil, Tussilago Farfara (Coltsfoot) Flower Extract, Equisetum Arvense Extract, Aesculus Hippocasyanum (Horse Chestnut) Extract, Rosemarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract in Purified Water/Aqua, Petrolatum, Cetyle Alcohol, Centrimonium Chloride, Dimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Hydroxypropyl trimonium Chloride, Laurus Nobblis Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Oil, Neroli Oil, Ribes Nigrum (Black Currant)

Pros:
  • The smell: Light, but very pleasant!
  •  Leaves hair feeling moisturized
  • Reasonably priced $5-8
Cons:
  • Contains Petrolatum as the second ingredient: In case you don't know ingredients in cosmetics are listed  in descending order of amount (I personally don't care about the petrolatum in DPR 11  because it makes my hair feels like Butter!)
  • Many synthetic ingredients

Thirfty Find: 5 Tips for Thift Store Shopping

I live two blocks away from a Goodwill  and from now and then I go there to see if I find anything I like.

The other  day I found this cute balloon sleeve top for $2.99!

5 Helpful Tips for Thrift Store Shopping

1. Take your time: For your visit to be fruitful you have to be willing to spend a least an hour in the store.

2. Come with a goal: You can not look through everything and sometimes the amount  of clothes can get overwhelming, especially when they aren't organized. Set a goal e.g vintage dress and look at all the dresses, if you don't find anything leave and come back another day.

3. Inspect the clothes carefully before buying: I often find  holes stains, missing zippers or buttons; so watch out for these

4. Accept defeat: Sometimes you might be lucky and find a lot of stuffs, but sometimes you might not. That's ok. Just come back another day.

5. Wash the clothes before wearing them: Some people don't necessarily wash their clothes before they drop them off, and even if they do, you don't know how long they've been sitting there, or how many hands have been handling them. So please wash them.

Good luck : )

Protective Style: Kinky Twists!

I got tired of dealing with my hair and always having to wonder what to do with it each morning. So I decided to get kinky twists.
I purchased this hair because it's just like my natural hair texture. Love it! I was hoping that they could use this instead of the traditional Marley braid hair. And it was only 5 bucks!

So I went to NuGrowth Hair Studio in Englewood, NJ ; and unfortunately my hair dresser told me that she couldn't use that hair.. luckily I had purchased one pack of Marley braid hair in #30 (I was planning to mix both).

So she used that and some hair she had left over for the rest of my head. I like the result, especially how she handled the ends. They look like littlle coils. So cute! I should have picked another color though...That red is to red (What was I thinking..?!)

She told me that the best hair for kinky twist was:

Janet Collection  Marley Braid
Nafy Collection hair

Next Time I know!
